Piazza del Duomo - Lecce
Tuesday 24th May and an early morning walk around the Piazza del Duomo often referred to as Cathedral Square in Lecce, is a baroque feast, the city's focal point and a sudden open space amid the surrounding enclosed lanes. The large enclosed courtyard is full of character, and bounded by Baroque and Renaissance buildings set back from the main street. In medieval times and during times of invasion the inhabitants of Lecce would barricade themselves in the square, which has conveniently narrow entrances. The 12th-century cathedral is one of Giuseppe Zimbalo's finest works; he was also responsible for the 68 metre tall bell tower.
