Polignano - Bari
After a Friday morning in the Locorotondo market and a tour of Alberobello we headed over to Polignano a Mare in the afternoon, this is a picture-perfect medieval town in the province of Bari, built on steep limestone cliffs and caves which overlook the Adriatic Sea. Much like other towns in Puglia, Polignano is a mix of chalk white houses and narrow cobblestoned streets worn smooth over the years. The town has been inhabited since prehistoric times according to archaeological excavations, but historians believe that during the 4th century BC, Polignano used to be the Greek city of ‘Neapolis’. The town is famous throughout the world for four major things, Firstly the cliff diving, in recent years the ‘Red Bull Diving Championships, which attract crowds of up to 50,000 spectators in the town. Secondly, Polignano’s delicious ice cream, the third is the yellow purple Polignano carrot, and finally the great Italian singer and songwriter Domenico Modugno, who wrote and sang the hit ‘Volare’ was born in the town.
