Bourton on the Water
Bourton-on-the-Water is located just a 30 minutes’ drive from Moreton-in-Marsh, and 5 minutes from Stow-on-the-Wold. It is frequently voted one of the prettiest villages in Britain, and often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ with its charming stone bridges, the River Windrush, and a variety of shops, gift shops and cafes, makes this the popular village it is today.
The river winds its way through the village flanked by long wide lush greens, lined with Jacobean and Georgian fronted houses made from honey coloured Cotswold stone. Five low, arched stone bridges built between 1654 and 1953 cross the very shallow River Windrush.
The village's history dates to 709 AD, with remains of Neolithic pottery found close by and excavations at Salmonsbury camp showing evidence of habitation from the Neolithic period through the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The river Windrush is a tributary of the river Thanes, its village green and war memorial on the riverbank makes this a popular meeting point and picnic spot.
