Saltburn by the sea
This was our first visit to Saltburn for many many years. Today, Saltburn has maintained much of its original charm as a Victorian seaside resort including its pier and the colourful Italian Gardens adjacent to Skelton beck.
Saltburn has the oldest and most photographed water balanced cliff tramways in Britain that is still in operation, (although due to the current Covid Pandemic is closed to the public. July 2021) linking the town with the pier 120 feet below. You can park at sea level where the old fishing village straddles Skelton Beck. The Ship Inn remains as a focal point, steeped in smuggling folklore. The Cleveland Way passes through along the coastline and follows a steep path up to Huntcliff, once the site of a Roman Signal Station.
The beach is a popular draw to the discerning visitor, it has in the past been given Blue Flag status due to the quality of the sea water. The area is popular with paddle boarders learning and honing their skills at the paddle board school based on the waters edge. A walk along the seafront is a must, there are several small cafés and places for refreshment. The beach area to the South of the pier is dog friendly.
