Pale Brittlestem (Candolleomyces candolleanus)
The Pale Brittlestem is a delicate fungus commonly found in woodlands, meadows, and lawns. Its cap is thin-fleshed, crumbly, and typically measures 3 to 6 cm in diameter, with a pale to white colour that fades to a darker shade as it matures. The gills are crowded, and initially white, becoming pinky-grey and then dark brown as the spores mature. It grows in shaded areas, amongst decaying wood and leaf litter, and is commonly found in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. The cap may retain veil fragments along the margin, and the gills are closely packed and not attached to the stem. The best time to see pale brittlestem fungi on the Barff ss between late summer through to early December.
